Taqwah, in Arabic تقوى, is a concept in Islam that is interpreted as righteousness and God consciousness. It has many further interpretations, for example, Taqwah may mean piety, fear of Allah, love for Allah, and self restraint.
Having Taqwah allows a person to be constantly aware of both God's presence and attributes and a reminder of their relationship and responsibility towards God and all human beings, i.e. to live in harmony, peace and to be a blessing to the society.
The scholars explain that the way to Taqwah is through obedience of God, avoiding disobedience, and striving to stay away from doubtful matters and “to know and to serve the humanity”. Allah said in the Holy Quran:
ياايها الناس انا خلقناكم من ذكر وانثى وجعلناكم شعوبا وقبائل لتعارفوا ان اكرمكم عند الله اتقاكم ان الله عليم خبير
“O mankind! We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that you may know one another. Verily, the most honourable of you with Allah is that who has Taqwah. Verily, Allah is All-
Ali bin Abi Taleb may Allah be pleased wih him defined Taqwah as:
التقوى هي الخوف من الجليل ، والعمل بالتنزيل ، والقناعة بالقليل ، والإستعداد ليوم الرحيل
.. "Taqwah means fearing Allah the Almighty, acting in accordance with the Qur'an, contentment with whatever little we have, and preparing for the day of departure (death)."
